Discovering My Value
Guatemala: Free to Live
At just 14 years old, Sofia* has already faced more hardship than many experience in a lifetime.
Originally from Guatemala’s Chimaltenango department, Sofia’s life changed dramatically four months ago when she entered a shelter for vulnerable girls. She arrived carrying the weight of a traumatic experience: she had been abused by her father and, as a result, became pregnant. Today, she is caring for her baby daughter, who is only a few months old.
The challenges of motherhood would be daunting for anyone, but for a young teenager still trying to process her own trauma, they can feel overwhelming.
“Being such a young mother is difficult,” Sofia shares. “There are days when despair takes over, and I don’t know what to do or how I am going to provide a future for my daughter.”
Alongside the responsibilities of caring for a newborn, Sofia also carries a deep sense of loss. Separation from her mother has been one of the most painful parts of her journey. She misses the guidance, comfort and advice that she believes would help her navigate this new chapter of her life. Yet, amid the uncertainty, Sofia found a source of hope.
A few months after arriving at the shelter, she became involved in the Bible Society’s Free to Live project. Through workshops, personal support and devotional materials, the programme has helped her to begin rebuilding her confidence and sense of self-worth.
“The most important thing I have learned is my true value in God’s eyes,” she says. “I have learned that my dignity is not defined by my past or by the wounds that were caused to me.”
One lesson in particular, titled “My Value,” has had a lasting impact on her. It encouraged her to see herself not as a victim defined by tragedy, but as a young person with worth, potential and a future.
The project’s journal and stories have also provided reassurance during difficult moments. Reading about others who have overcome challenges helped her realise that she is not alone in her struggles. For Sofia, the encouragement she has recieved from Bible Society volunteers has been just as important as the resources they provide. Through their consistent presence and support, she has experienced care, compassion and a renewed sense of hope.
“I want to thank every Bible Society volunteer for their effort and dedication,” she says. “The support they have given us has made a real difference in my life.”
While Sofia’s journey is far from over, she is beginning to look ahead with greater confidence. Caring for her daughter remains a daily challenge, but she is discovering strength she did not know she possessed. With ongoing support and a growing understanding of her own value, she is taking important steps toward healing and building a brighter future for herself and her child.
Through stories like Sofia’s, we are reminded that even in the darkest circumstances, hope, dignity and restoration can still be found.
